12thStatistics Olympiad 2020

Technological applications of Mathematics underpin our daily lives and the central ingredient in making them happen is indisputably computational science. The evolution of both Mathematics and Computer Science today will invariably shape our world tomorrow. Statistics as an axiomatic science is undoubtedly a branch of Mathematics and as an applied science it is an inalienable ally of Computer Science. The range and compass of these sciences is so enormous that they will always challenge the capabilities of the human mind. Discoveries in them will influence the world in ways that one can neither predict nor imagine. Breakthroughs and advances in theses sciences will facilitate inventions in all other fields of science. Therefore, there is a need to further for the awareness, power and application of these disciplines. Towards this endan Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science was setup in Hyderabad Central University in 2006 and is befittingly named it after the living legend and one of the most celebrated statisticians of our times, Padma Vibhushan C.R. Rao, FRS, former Director, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and presently Research Professor at University of Buffalo, USA. Prof PC Mahalanobis, Founder Director, Indian Statistical Institute, (ISI) Kolkata is the father of Statistics who along with prof.CR Rao have put India not far from the centre of the statistical map of the world. ISI had played a major role in the development of statistics as a separate discipline of study and research and in helping the government in establishing a well-designed national statistical system.Statistics is needed in all our activities, for the individual to make wise decision, for institutions, to seek optimum solutions to their problems and for the government to make short range policy decisions and long range plans for social and economic development. With the advent of information technology, voluminous data is available in business and financial sectors, health sector, medical sciences and environment sciences through web sources, industrial and social sectors. To analyze these data sets for the welfare of society we need a large number of Statisticians and Data Analysts/Scientists. Thereis acute shortage of Statisticians and Data Analysts/Scientists in India and abroad. Prof. C.R.Rao, who spent forty years of his prime life at the Indian statistical institute developing statistical activities in India, is active even now at the age of 99. In order to raise awareness of statistics, and to encourage those with an aptitude for number and numerical reasoning to study statistics, Dr.C.R.Rao has suggested conducting a statistics Olympiad to spot statistical talent at an early age on similar lines to the continuing Mathematics Olympiad. CR Rao AIMSCS conducted statistics Olympiad for the first time in the world in 2009 in India and is continuing to do so every year to bring to the attention of students the importance of statistics and the need to produce statisticians for national development. At each level, top 3 students will be given C R Rao and C. Bhargavi Rao Prizes of Rs. 15,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 7,000 on 29th June 2020 during 14thStatistics Day celebrations at C R Rao AIMSCS, Hyderabad. Also, top performers up to a maximum of 15 students in each level will be awarded merit certificates during the same function.CR Rao AIMSCS is conducting the 12thStatistics Olympiad examination on 19th JANUARY 2020.We request the high school students (class IX to XII) who have flair for mathematical sciences to write Statistics Olympiad examination to be held on 19th JANUARY 2020 at Hyderabad, Warangal, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Khammam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, Tirupathi, Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Baroda, Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapura, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Gangtok, Port Blair and Sri Lanka centers.
